INSTITUTE CODE OF CONDUCT

We promote freedom of expression and open communication. But we expect all students and teachers to follow a code of conduct. They should avoid offending, participating in serious disputes or disrupting class in any way. We also expect them to foster a well-organized, respectful, thoughtful, and collaborative environment.

All students and teachers should respect their colleagues. We won’t allow any kind of discriminatory behavior, or harassment. Harassment includes bullying, intimidation, direct insults, malicious gossip and victimization.

If you suspect that an offender doesn’t realize they are guilty of harassment, you could talk to them directly in an effort to resolve the issue. This tactic is appropriate for cases of minor harassment (e.g. inappropriate jokes between colleagues.) If you do not feel safe doing this, please contact the institute.

Sexual harassment can include unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature. Harassment does not have to be of a sexual nature, however, and can include offensive remarks about a person's sex. For example, it is illegal to harass a woman by making offensive comments about women in general.

If you are being harassed, whether by a student or teacher, please email the institute. Anything you disclose will remain confidential.

Thank you for reading this thoroughly. We all look forward to working and flourishing together.

Special Note from John Breen:

What I want for my students is the same thing that I want for myself, to be constantly learning and growing, to become thriving, creative human beings with integrity and compassion. I want to acknowledge that I have not always been as professional as possible as a teacher. Learning from past mistakes has been painful but so worth it. I have grown a lot. With this Code of Conduct, I will dutifully endeavor to hold myself and others accountable for outdated behaviors as it is my deepest intention to create a safe and inclusive environment for training hard, expanding our minds and having fun!
